can't

So you think you can’t? Lets find out if that’s true…

If you’re anything like me that word “can’t” is very restrictive and limiting. If someone tells me that I can’t do something. My immediate response is “Why not?”

However, when I tell myself that I can’t do things, I believe it.

^^^ And that is the issue that a lot of us need to overcome.

can't

“I just can’t do it”

I’ve heard this phrase, or similar, from clients over the years and it all comes down to the same thing:

“I don’t believe that I am fit enough/strong enough/capable enough”

And quite often when we think these thoughts we find examples in our past of times when we’ve failed.

Diets that you tried and didn’t complete
Workout plans that you started and found too difficult
The time you decided to cut out sugar and didn’t keep it up

Any time in your life when you’ve been unable to do something you remember that and use it to support the belief that you can’t change. That you’re not capable.

Change your mindset

I’d encourage you to think of the things that you have achieved, anything that you’ve worked towards and are proud of. Even if it doesn’t relate to diet or exercise.

Those little wins are proof that when you have the right tools, the right circumstances and the right mindset you can see things through to the end and reach a goal.

Why should a change in diet or fitness be any different?

can't

From can’t to can

You might believe that things are harder for you because of genetics or circumstances. You might believe that you’re just not able to change.

Let me tell you, that’s nonsense.

Ok, some people have more of an advantage than others, for example if you can afford to see a personal trainer four times a week and have intense nutrition coaching then yes – results will come quicker.

If you have a history of disordered eating then yes, change may take longer and be more challenging.

BUT

your mindset is everything, and that is something that you’re always in control of.

If you believe that you can – you will.

Fake it til you make it

You don’t need to truly believe that you are capable of everything straight away. This is why it’s important to be patient with yourself.

However you can be curious about what would happen if you just tried.

What would happen if you could do it?
What would happen if you just pushed through the hard bits?
What would happen if you didn’t give up?

Tweak the circumstances

Make things easier on yourself.

Seek help if you need – hire a trainer or look for online coaching.
Invite some friends to join you to help stay accountable and consistent.
Don’t go crazy and focus on the all or nothing approach. Small steps.

Don’t tell me you can’t –  You Can.

p.s – Yes, this is easy for me to say but I’ve been through this and I appreciate how hard it is to do.
