meal prep

The media is full of confusing information, when it comes to weight loss we’re in a TMI society. So when I saw the huffington post article about meal prepping make you fat I had to read.

So, should you worry?

The article, which I will link to, speaks about the positives of meal prepping first.

Those who prep their meals in advance are more successful with weight loss because they measure their portions ahead of time and they make healthy food choices in advance.

They’re less likely to be caught short out of the house and forced to choose between crisps or chocolate for lunch.

So why is this a problem?!

BPAs…

If you’re unfamiliar with BPAs they’re a chemical found in plastics that have been shown to disrupt our endocrine system (our hormones) and be harmful to health.

The issue in the post is that we portion food into plastic containers, then warm that food up in the microwave while in the container. This draws the BPAs into our food, we eat that, we disrupt our endocrine system and boom – weight gain.

Is this an issue? Yes. Not only are plastics bad for the ocean they’re not great for us, we can’t argue that anymore.

Should you lie awake at night because of it? No.
And you certainly shouldn’t abandon your meal prepping.

Here’s why…

IT IS NOT THE BIGGEST FACTOR IN WEIGHT GAIN.

Trust me.

This is why there is so much confusion in the health industry. We get good at practicing healthy habits and then BAM, an article comes along that convinces you that you must be doing it wrong.

If it’s not that, it’s the suggestion that perhaps there is a better way. We jump from strategy to strategy never giving anything time to actually WORK.

What if this was easy?

Lets un-complicate things again.

On the hierarchy of weight loss it goes like this:

– Portion size

– Food choices

– Energy balance (energy in vs energy out)

– Movement that supports your weight loss

– Stress management

– Plenty of sleep

AND THEN you can start getting a bit more technical.

If you stick to those though, you’ll see some results.

In the meantime

– Prep meals in advance if it works for you

– Choose BPA free containers, or glass ones instead

– Don’t heat things up while still in plastic containers

– Congratulate yourself for following the basic steps consistently

– Throw your middle finger up to anyone trying to disrupt your weight loss by overcomplicating things and trying to throw you off track.

You’re better than that.

Master the low hanging fruit of weight loss first and then, you can take things to another level later on.
