We all know that moving and staying active is good for the body and the brain. During lockdown and this pandemic it’s even more important but for some of us moving has never been harder.
So here are some workout tips for staying active.
1 Do a workout you enjoy
Instagram and Twitter are full of people talking about what they are doing to stay fit and active. This is great inspiration for things you want to do but it can also create pressure.
Super fit person does a HIIT workout every morning, we should do that too.
But wait, Super Strong person does yoga every evening, maybe that’s the secret.
But no, Super active person does weights at lunchtime. What’s best?!
The secret is, the best workout is the one that you enjoy. The one that you will do regularly.
Anything that gets you moving and feeling more awake and positive is a winner.
2. Make it shorter
There are two reasons why this might work for you.
Firstly, finding the motivation to workout at home might be difficult for you. When you’re not in a gym environment it can be hard to switch from “chill out” mindset to “active”.
If your workout is short it is less intimidating and takes less time and energy to complete.
Secondly, we are all experiencing this differently but it’s a highly stressful time. Exercise, while beneficial, is another stressor. Some is good but more is not necessarily better. This is especially good if you are feeling more tired during lockdown.
3. Motivation is a myth
This is so important to remember. If we wait for the motivation to do something it may never come.
Some workouts will be great, others will be ok and some of them you won’t want to do at all.
(It’s important to know the difference between not wanting to do a workout and being too tired/sore to do it safely.)
Motivation comes from action. We get into the habit of exercising regularly by doing, not by waiting.
So if you’re waiting for the lighting bolt of inspiration to workout, take charge and make it happen yourself.
In Summary
This post is here to give you some tips on working out, not to make you feel bad if you’re choosing not to.
We make and own our choices everyday and you’re not a bad or lazy person by not working out right now.
We are doing our best to get through this, do what is making you happy.
